The bugs were getting worse. MacNeal was slapping at them as if there were a dozen tiny brush fires on his neck and arms and face. [...] It took a scream piercing the air after the call ended to take his mind off the bugs. It was a woman’s scream—not Oksana’s, since she was walking nearby, so it had to be Tatiana’s. Without saying a word, MacNeal leaped into action, swinging up his flash-gun and charging toward the jumble of little hills where the cry had originated.
